Charity shop’s call for volunteers
A NEW charity shop is poised to open its doors in a South Tyneside shopping centre soon.
But a team of dedicated volunteers is needed to support the latest Sue Ryder outlet at The Nook in South Shields.
Shoppers keen for some budget-friendly retail therapy will be able to bag some fantastic finds at the Prince Edward Road store.
Ray Hall, Sue Ryder area manager, said: “Our fabulous new store will offer an excellent shopping experience, whether people are looking for handbags, books, music DVDs, quality fashion in ladies, men and children’s clothing or any number of other shopping delights.
“We will have a unique range of new goods, including musical instruments, with all the proceeds going to help Sue Ryder provide specialist hospice and neurological care.”
Shop manager Yvonne Butler is keen to recruit a team of volunteers in a wide range of roles, which can give work experience for those seeking permanent employment or people who might have a few hours a week to spare.
She said: “Volunteers are the lifeblood of our charity, and we are recruiting now for our new shop.
“It’s a really exciting opportunity to join a brand new team and be an integral part of helping us to set up the shop pre-opening and support us ongoing to grow within the local community.
“We can provide a diverse range of volunteering roles from working on the sales floor, cashiers, window-dressing, replenishing our sales floor or working in our back room, preparing, pricing and steaming stock.
“We also have an exciting volunteer role as community stock generator, who would be assisting us to find the much-needed goods to keep our shop filled to the rafters.
“This role may be suited to those people who may not have time to spend in the shop, but who have connections with businesses or community groups.”
Mr Hall said: “Our team of van drivers will be on hand to pick up those larger donations.
“We also have several furniture shops in the North East, so we are also appealing for furniture and electrical items.”
He said: “All the collections are free of charge.”
Sue Ryder is a national charity, and money raised from the South Shields shop will help to continue to provide expert and compassionate care to people living with end of life and long-term conditions such as cancer, strokes, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, dementia, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and motor neurone disease.
The shop will open before the end of next month.
