Centurion fun to the Max
YOUNGSTERS will be put to the test tomorrow as they step back in time.
Arbeia Roman Fort in South Shields will be playing host to Maximus the Centurion, who will put South Tyneside kids through their paces.
The Roman Army Boot Camp is being staged as part of the annual Heritage Open Days.
Young visitors to the Baring Street landmark will be able to sign up for the free sessions at 10am, 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm.
Children aged from five will learn marching, drills and preparing for battle, with full costumes provided for all participants.
Steve Richardson has been appearing across the region for three years as the fearful Maximus the Centurion.
''Maximus is a Centurion of the Sixth Legion, left behind after his legion completed Hadrian's Wall.
"He oversees training of new recruits, discipline among the troops and enforces Roman rule in the local area. He is a professional career soldier with more than 20 years' service in the legion, and expects his soldiers to serve the Empire with strength and honour!"
Steve's stint with the Roman Army began after working as a museum assistant at Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend, where he provided occasional costumed guided tours and publicity work.
He said: "As the word spread and demand grew, I had to take the decision to give up 'the day job' and become a full-time Roman!
"I'm now self employed full-time, providing education workshops, special event activities and promotional opportunities for heritage organisations and schools, both locally and nationally."
Events officer Gill Scott said: "The boot camps with Maximus are always brilliant fun, and a great chance for our young visitors to come and see what life in the Roman Army would have been like."
No level of fitness is required, but booking is recommended by calling 456 8740.
The fun doesn't stop tomorrow. On Sunday, Arbeia will come to life from 1pm to 5pm, as Roman re-enactors Quinta take over the fort with gladiator and military displays.
