Budding artists enjoy brush with fame

BUDDING artists from South Tyneside are enjoying a brush with fame after putting on their first exhibition.

A display of work by members of the Bede of Jarrow U3A (University of the Third Age) is now showing in South Shields.

The group, which meets at Primrose Village Community Centre, has only been up and running for a few months, and its 35 members have all produced a picture for the display.

Mavis Hudson, who runs the group with Brian York, said: "I am so proud of their work.

"We've only been going a short time and what we have to show is fantastic.

"Some of the members could paint already, but others have only just started."

The exhibition, which runs until March 8, includes oil canvasses, drawings and watercolours, and is on display in the cafeteria of the Central Library in Prince Georg Square, South Shields.

U3A is a self-help organisation for older people which holds classes on more than 300 subjects across the country.

Bede of Jarrow U3A hosts groups for walking, indoor bowls, 10-pin bowls, a feel-good group, art, reading, music, and quizzes.

It is also trying to organise swimming and line dancing classes.

For more information, people can ring the community centre on 424 9977.
