Bonfire fright for 130 escaped cows

COWS caused Bonfire Night chaos when 130 got free after being spooked by fireworks in South Tyneside.

The cows and bullocks escaped from a field in Shields Road, Cleadon Village, just after midnight.

It's believed the animals were scared by fireworks and burst through a wall.

By 5am, 88 animals – which were in an agitated state – were wandering around East and West Boldon, Boldon Colliery, Tyne Dock and West Harton.

Police were forced to issue a warning to motorists, but all the cows were later found and taken back to their field.

South Shields Fire Station received about a dozen calls during the night from concerned residents about bonfires.

But on the crews' arrival, most fires were found to be safe and under control, with adults supervising.

However, crew manager John McMillan, was left stunned when he filled out his fire reports at 2am today, from his office at the John Reid road station.

He said: "I looked out of the window and two or three police cars were parked up.

"Then an officer came by on his quad bike chasing two or three cows. It was very bizarre, and not what you expect at that time in morning.

"However, the rest of the night went very well indeed, there were no major incidents."
