Amarillo star will headline festival

NEVER mind Amarillo – show him the way to South Shields.

Pop legend Tony Christie has been named as one of the headline acts at this year's South Tyneside Summer Festival.

The 66-year-old who had Top 20 hits with I Did What I did For Maria and Is This The Way To Amarillo? in the 1970s, will be on the stage at Bents Park on Sunday, August 1.

He will star alongside a host of famous faces during the free music festival, which runs from June to August.

Coun Tracey Dixon, lead member for culture and wellbeing on South Tyneside Council, said: "We're delighted to announce Tony Christie as the first confirmed headline act for our Sunday Concert season for the 2010 Summer Festival.

"I'm sure everyone will be marching to his famous song Is This The Way To Amarillo?, and be on their feet singing along to a fantastic afternoon of hits."

More than 100,000 people flocked to the seafront last summer to see a series of performances by stars such as Toyah Wilcox and Andy Abraham.

When Abba Tribute band Bjorn Again and pop stars S-Club 3 performed, festival records were broken as 17,500 people flooded through the gates.

Although details of this summer's entertainment acts are still being finalised, visitors can expect the traditional Cookson Parade, Mouth Of Tyne Festival and live music from the Amphitheatre in Sea Road, South Shields.

Coun Dixon added: "We're busy finalising the rest of this year's brilliant festival programme, so keep checking for the latest updates."
