A £10,000 scheme is getting on the road to solve long-running parking problems in South Tyneside.

Contractors are creating eight new lay-bys in Elmfield Terrace, Hebburn, where a lack of space has sparked traffic problems for decades.

The road is very narrow and residents often find they cannot park near their homes at busy times.

Members of Hebburn community area forum decided to fund several road improvements in the area, off Finchale Road.

Coun John McCabe, for the Hebburn South ward, said: “These streets date back to the early 1950s, and were never really made for a lot of traffic.

“We are reconfiguring footpaths in Elmfield Terrace in order to create the eight new lay-bys and lessen congestion and possible friction about parking spaces.”

In addition, a £5,000 footpath replacement scheme will take place in nearby Arlington Road, where HGV vehicles have repeatedly cracked pavements. Coun McCabe added: “There have been issues with vehicles visiting Elmfield Social Club, and council bin wagons driving over the pavement, which is badly cracked.

“Residents are fed up with the state of the footpath and we aim to include design features in the scheme to prevent further damage.”

More footpath improvements are set to take place in nearby streets, including Avon Road, Tees Road and Wear Road.

“This is both a social and environmental scheme, to improve the footpaths around the old folk’s bungalows in that area,” Coun McCabe added.
