KARATE kids from Boldon have returned with a pile of medals from a top-level championships.

Eleisha Mitchinson, Rebecca Bradburn and Sadie Stoner all took gold medals in the English National Kyu grade championships in Sheffield.

The standard at the national competition was exceptional, with almost 500 competitors from the best clubs in the country taking part.

All three gold medal winners train at Boldon Methodist Church in Front Street, East Boldon, at a branch of the Dokan karate club.

Eleisha, from East Boldon, and Sadie, from Whitburn, both began training there after an after-school karate club was set up by head coach Kevan Mitchinson.

Other medal winners from Boldon included Megan Heslop, Hannah Nicholson and Sophie McNally, who all won bronze.

Simone Stewart won silver and bronze.

Eleisha and Rebecca also took silver in the kumite event.

Mr Mitchinson said: “They girls did really well in a competition where the standard was very high.

“They all put plenty of time into training. They practice for up to 12 hours a week, and their skill and courage was evident for all to see as they proved yet again that Dokan is one of the top karate clubs in England.”
