Helping jobless find top form

JOBLESS young people in Hebburn are boosting their employment prospects by acquiring new skills and confidence.
The Return To Form programme is aimed at helping unemployed teenagers in the area to find work.
Designed for young people classed as not in further education, employment or training (NEET), the scheme is run by Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle, from its youth base in Mountbatten Avenue, Hebburn.
Two young people, who have recently benefited from the scheme are Abby Henderson and Scott Catlin.Both 18, Abby and Scott lacked confidence and a sense of direction before getting involved in the programme.
Scott said: “I wasn’t really doing anything at all since I left college, but with the help of Groundwork I increased my confidence and managed to secure a job.
“The course helped me get motivated and develop the skills I needed to move on.”
Scott later secured a seven-month contract with Groundwork’s landscaping team.
Abby Henderson, enhanced her employment prospects through the course, and went on to do a business and adminstration apprenticeship, including a placement at Groundwork’s headquarters at The Eco Centre in Windmill Way, Hebburn.
Miriam McGregor, 14 to 19 co-ordinator with Groundwork, said: “We take a holistic approach with Return To Form, providing help with everything from young people’s communication skills to sport and fitness, and looking at their health.
“Working with South Tyneside College and training provider, Springboard, we have helped about 50 young people through the Hebburn base over the last two years, and at least 80 per cent of young people on the programme find work of some kind.”

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 12:46 PMStephen58 Groundwork dont work for free, they get paid for all the work they do (the project above is probably funded by The Department for Work and Pensions), they charge similar rates to those that private providerscontracters do, except that any profits are reinvested in the charity's work and dont end up in someones pocket. It is true that they have a very cosy relationship with the council which is perhaps un healthy.

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 12:03 PMGroundwork do a lot of voluntary work for the council, and what I would like to know is are these jobs, proper paid work or as I suspect jobs where you work for your dole, work which used to be done by paid council workers who because of government cuts are out of work. If it is as I suspect, working for your pay, then I find this article just another piece of Tory propaganda aimed at convincing the gullible public that unemployment is coming down with their vicious policies.
