Heart turnout for NHS health-check day

DOZENS of people got to the heart of the matter at a special event in Jarrow.
A Healthy Heart Day at Low Simonside Community Association in Taunton Avenue, attracted almost 90 local residents.
People underwent everything from blood pressure to cholesterol checks as part of the NHS-backed event.
Among those who took part was long-serving Bede ward member, Coun Tom Hanson, who said: “There was something for everyone at the Healthy Heart Day.
“I had a hand massage, and there were all sorts of health checks for people aged from 40 to 74.
“People had their blood pressure taken and there was even a height machine.
“It was extremely well attended, and it’s hoped the event will be followed up in the future with other sessions for the benefit of the local community.
“There was a good response from residents, and I think it was a great success.”
Dawn Grant, a community support worker at Low Simonside CA, said various community groups were involved, from Age UK to Weigh Watchers and the North East Council on Addictions (NECA).
She said: “Apart from various health checks and monitoring, we had a guitarist and singers, someone providing free soup, and the involvement of groups such as Deter, which helps with confidence-building.
“A total of 87 people attended, which we considered an excellent turnout, and we plan to follow it up with NHS health checks at the centre, on March 15.”
