Gas blast fear at chemical plant

ROADS were closed near the Shell Mex chemical plant in Jarrow last night after a fire.

Firefighters from South Shields and Hebburn were called to the scene at 6.55pm.

A portable building was on fire in the Cemex compound, about 100 metres from the plant in Curlew Road.

Because of nearby gas holders, roads in the immediate vicinity were closed for a time as a precautionary measure.

A police spokesman said: “At no time was there any risk to the public.”

The blaze is being treated as malicious.
