Teacher defends vocational qualifications

A TEACHER in South Tyneside today defended vocational qualifications, saying that school league tables should not get in the way of student success.

More than 3,000 of the qualifications will no longer be recognised on performance tables from 2014, as the Government clamps down on courses like fish husbandry and office skills, which are worth several GCSEs.

But James Boyle, head of creative design at Mortimer Community College in Reading Road, South Shields, says some vocational courses are essential for providing the workforce of the future.

Mr Boyle, who teaches a creative and media diploma, said: “Without vocational courses in film, photography, IT and web design, where are all the creative people going to come from?

“Over the past few years, the number of vocational courses has grown. The Government needed to pull it back, and rightly so, and they have come up with qualifications that they feel are worthy of being studied.” Mr Boyle is in favour of GCSEs, but believes vocational education is essential for pupils who need it to follow a chosen career.

The creative and media diploma is worth seven GCSEs, but from 2014, it will just count for one.

Mr Boyle added: “Schools are having to decide what is in the interest of the students, and it’s not just about a headline figure. It’s about what course is right for students.”

Chris Braybrook, head of school at Harton Technology College in Lisle Road, South Shields, said: “It is important that a student follows a course that is suitable for their individual needs, and encourages them to flourish and engages them.

“A well-delivered vocational course, balanced with core GCSE subjects, is a suitable programme of study for many students, offering good preparation for employment.”

Vocational education has also been backed by South Tyneside College.

Lindsey Whiterod, principal and chief executive of the college, said: “Vocational qualifications should be recognised as career-enhancing opportunities. They help people acquire practical knowledge and skills that they can apply to a chosen career.”
