SOUTH Tyneside’s scores put the borough fourth-highest in the region’s education authority areas.

It ranks 76th out of 152 local education authorities across the UK, with an average of 57.7 per cent of pupils leaving school with at least five A* to C grades (or equivalent) in English and maths.

South Tyneside was the fourth-top performer in the North East, finishing behind Gateshead, with an average score of 60.3 per cent, Durham, with 60.0 per cent, and North Tyneside on 58.5 per cent.

Northumberland equalled South Tyneside’s average score of 57.7 per cent, while Hartlepool scored 56.4 per cent.

Schools in Sunderland and Newcastle scored an average of 55.4 per cent and 52.6 per cent respectively.

Coun Jim Foreman, South Tyneside Council’s lead member for children and young people, said: “Over the past few years, South Tyneside has done exceptionally well.

“This is continuing and we have finished ahead than some of the bigger authorities in the North East, including Newcastle, Sunderland and Northumberland.

“I am certain that the hard work will continue and our schools will continue to climb the tables.”
