Seven schools unite to improve teaching standards
The new Harton Technology College sixth form building
SCHOOLS in South Tyneside have signed up to a new “high quality” teacher training scheme
Harton Technology College in Lisle Road, South Shields, was awarded Teaching School status last July to provide training and support for trainee and senior teachers in the borough.
Now the Harton Teaching School Alliance has been formed, involving seven of the borough’s schools.
Cleadon Village C of E Primary School, Boldon Lane, Cleadon; East Boldon Infant School, Front Street, East Boldon; Jarrow School, Field Terrace, Jarrow; Epinay Business and Enterprise School, Clervaux Terrace, Jarrow; Marine Park Primary School, Hatfield Square, South Shields; Mortimer Community College, Reading Road, South Shields; and Whitburn C of E Academy, Shanks Road, Whitburn, have all signed up.
Park View School in County Durham has also joined the scheme, which is being supported by Newcastle University and South Tyneside Council.
Ken Gibson, executive headteacher at Harton Technology College, said: “We are responsible for leading and developing this exciting new alliance to deliver high quality training and professional development for teachers and leaders at all stages in their career.
“As this new alliance develops, Harton Technology College will be at the forefront of developing programmes to provide a strong supply of new teachers, develop leaders and the next generation of heads, to drive school improvement and bring real benefits to pupils.”
The college is one of five secondary schools in the North East, and 56 across the UK, with Teaching School status. Earlier this month, Steve Munby CBE, chief executive of the National College for School Leadership, joined parents, staff and governors at Harton Technology College for a special event to launch the scheme.
Mr Gibson said the scheme will be “training the next generation of teachers”.
He added: “To be awarded Teaching School status is a fantastic accolade for Harton Technology College, and recognises our outstanding track record over recent years.
“It is an enormous responsibility and challenge but I am confident that we have the capacity to ensure that the school continues to be at the cutting edge of the educational agenda.
“I feel sure that this will only serve to further improve the outcomes for all students and offer fabulous professional development opportunities for the staff.”
Mr Munby said: “It was a great privilege to have the opportunity to visit this fantastic school, and to hear about the outstanding work that is going on in South Tyneside.
“I was very impressed by the excellent and inspirational leadership, by the warmth of relationships I observed throughout my visit, by the very strong team and the vision for the future.”
