School praised for continued improvement

A SOUTH Tyneside school has been praised for continuing to improve over the past three years.
Inspectors from education watchdog Ofsted went into Lord Blyton Primary in Wenlock Road, South Shields, last month and rated the school “good”.
In their report, inspectors said pupils make good progress, and are inspired by headteacher Joanne Atherton, who is “continually striving for excellence”.
Alice Malcolm, chairwoman of governors, said today: “We are delighted with the inspection report – it reflects the hard work of everyone involved with the school. The children are happy here and they are getting a good education.
“There is a lovely family atmosphere at Lord Blyton and the parents join in with a lot of the things we do.” The report said: “Lord Blyton is a good school which has improved continuously since the previous inspection, as a consequence of the headteacher’s clear vision and determination to keep improving.
“Pupils are keen to learn from an early age and thoroughly enjoy school. This is evident in their above-average attendance.
“The good curriculum provides a developing range of interesting learning experiences, and provides well for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.”
The report also praises teaching staff, and describes lessons as “thought-provoking and engaging.”
It continues: “Over the past three years, the school has systematically improved the quality of learning to ensure that pupils’ achievement is at least good.
“Leadership and management are good.
“The staff share the vision, ambition and high aspirations of the headteacher and as a result, the quality and richness of learning are continually improving.
“Teaching is good overall and improving, with some outstanding teaching observed.”
The report also praised the way the school caters for disabled pupils, and those with special educational needs.
Inspectors suggested that to improve further, Lord Blyton’s must aim for more consistent progress in achievement at Key Stage 1, especially in reading.
From September this year, Ofsted will introduce no-notice inspections in a bid to drive up standards, but Mrs Malcolm said the school will be “always ready”.
She added: “We are always prepared, always ready. This time we only had two days’ notice, but we could accommodate an inspection at any time.”
Lord Blyton Primary School, which was also had a ‘good’ Ofsted report in October 2008, caters for about 110 pupils, aged between four and 11.
