A NEW education chief in South Tyneside is looking to boost the number of youngsters signing up for apprenticeships.

Lesley Renwick has joined South Tyneside College as head of engineering.

Ms Renwick says her sights are firmly set on getting more apprenticeships for young people.

She will oversee courses in engineering, construction and motor vehicle studies at the college site in St George’s Avenue, South Shields.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted with my appointment as head of engineering.

“My initial focus will be on apprenticeship growth in engineering, and also introducing apprenticeships in construction and motor vehicle studies.

“I am very much looking forward to my new role.

“The school has an excellent reputation, and I’ll be concentrating on developing this further.

“I’ve been very impressed by the talented teaching staff in the school, and the levels of support and encouragement they offer to students. It is this talent that will be the foundation on which we will grow.”

Ms Renwick has moved from a job with the Department for Education, where she worked on projects with the National College for School Leadership, and the Learning and Skills Improvement Service.

She has also previously worked as a head of department at Newcastle College.

Lindsey Whiterod, principal and chief executive at South Tyneside College, said: “I am very pleased Lesley has joined us. She will bring strong vision and leadership to the school.

“I am very much looking forward to working with her on our ambitious plans for the future.”

South Tyneside College offers a wide range of higher education courses, including apprenticeships.

It also has a world-renowned marine school, and offers career opportunities in nautical studies. The college will be featured on a new TV commercial, which will be screened on Tyne Tees Television from the end of this month, aimed at promoting the courses on offer.

It is part of a wider advertising campaign by the college.
