Head to retire as school revamp ends

A SOUTH Tyneside headteacher has announced he is retiring, as a major £12.9m school revamp nears completion.

Niall Anderson will step down as head of Hebburn Comprehensive School this summer, after spending most of his teaching career there.

Standards have improved at the school in recent years, and Mr Anderson said he is pleased to be leaving at a time of rising academic achievement.

The fabric of the building has also been enhanced with a Building Schools for the Future scheme, due to be completed this April.

He said: “I thought it was the right time to go, and I am particularly pleased to be leaving at a time when the school is more successful than it has ever been.

“We have had superb results lately, and that is reflected in the league tables.”

Mr Anderson started teaching French and English at the school in Campbell Park Road, Hebburn, in 1982.

He later became assistant and then deputy headteacher, before taking over as headteacher about 10 years ago.

Mr Anderson said he has “thoroughly enjoyed” his time as headteacher and being in charge of 850 pupils and 60 staff.

He added: “I feel the school is now a very different place than when I started, and I am pleased with the way standards have risen.

“Plus, the £12.9m school improvement scheme – making us IT-rich and meaning much improved sports facilities and other big changes – will provide a much better learning environment.”

Governors say they are seeking “an experienced, dynamic and inspirational leader” to take Mr Anderson’s place.

Family man Mr Anderson, who is looking forward to a fulfilling retirement, is the second borough head to announce his retirement recently.

Dr Joe Campbell, headteacher at St Joseph’s RC Comprehensive School in Mill Lane, Hebburn, will step down this summer.
