YOUNG hairdressers and beauty therapists at South Tyneside College are showing they’re a cut above the rest.

Students from the college, in St George’s Avenue, South Shields, have scooped nine top awards in a prestigious competition.

Competing against 12 other colleges and schools from across the North East, the South Tyneside teenagers excelled in the regional finals of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) Awards.

The 12 hairdressing and nine beauty students picked up seven first-place awards, one second place, and one third place during the event, which took place at the Federation Brewery in Gateshead.

The winning students will now turn their attention to the national finals of the competition, in Blackpool on March 12. Andrew Parkes, curriculum leader in hairdressing at South Tyneside College, said: “Hairdressing and beauty therapy at the college has built a great reputation for quality teaching and learning over the years.

“We continually work hard to offer the best training to our learners, and results like this demonstrate just how successful we are.

“It is also important to note the help and support we receive from our apprenticeship employers when taking part in events like this.”

Heather Fisher, curriculum leader in beauty therapy at the college, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the results, which demonstrate just how much hairdressing and beauty therapy talent there is at South Tyneside College.

“The students have been working tremendously hard preparing over the last few months, so they fully deserve these results.

“I would also like to thank all of the staff involved for their hard work and commitment in the lead-up to the competition.”

Katie Allen, 19, from South Shields, won the coveted Student Of The Year award at the event in Gateshead.

The Level 3 hairdressing apprentice, who works at Hair By Jack in South Shields, said: “I’m really proud to have won the award.

“It was a fantastic day. I can’t thank the staff at the college and my employer enough for all of the support that I have received.”

Hair and beauty students at the college are based in the new Top To Toe salon, which opened as part of a major refurbishment in 2011, which also included a new college entrance, student services area, refectory, classrooms, workshops, and learning areas.

The college has a rich history in the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) Awards, with students picking up a raft of wins over the past decade.
