College revamp set to enter new phase

A MULTI-million-pound scheme to transform South Tyneside College will enter its second phase this summer.
Work has already been completed on the £3.6m first phase of the revamp of facilities in St George’s Avenue, South Shields.
Newcastle-based budget and cost consultancy Faithful+Gould was instrumental in delivering the first phase of the college scheme, which included the relocation of the refectory, restaurant and kitchens, plus the creation of new hair and beauty facilities and lecture rooms.
The main reason for the redevelopment is to upgrade the college premises and create a more cohesive and ‘joined-up’ campus.
This follows the closure of the Hebburn campus last year, which was outmoded and costly to maintain.
Having been awarded the project through the Government’s Procurement Services Network, Faithful+Gould supplied project management, quantity surveying and health and safety services on the first phase of the scheme, which was part-funded by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA).
Now the Newcastle company has helped South Tyneside College secure more funding from the SFA and is pressing on to the second phase of the educational revamp.
Lindsey Whiterod, principal and chief executive of South Tyneside College, said: “Following the recent completion of our brand new facilities, we are delighted to be once again working with Faithful+Gould. Our successful bid for an enhanced renewal grant (phase 2) from the SFA has enabled us to embark on this new exciting project, which will see further redevelopment of the college to continue to improve the student experience.”
The work, which will again cost several million pounds, will include the refurbishment and conversion of a number of areas, including zones supporting skills development in the growth sectors of renewable and low-carbon technologies, advanced manufacturing, marine and offshore and the engineering school, plus the expansion of a facility for students with learning difficulties.
Mike Foggon, regional director at Faithful+Gould’s Newcastle office, who is heading the team, said: “We are delighted to be assisting the college improve the quality of their facilities, which, in turn, will improve the learning environment for both students and staff, which is essential for the successful delivery of 21st-century further education.”
Invitations for firms to tender for the scheme are due out next month, with work set to start on site in June.
