SCHOOLS in South Tyneside are celebrating after they were named among the best in the country for the second year running.

All nine of the borough’s mainstream secondary schools are above the national average when measured by the number of pupils achieving five or more A* to C grades at GCSE level in any subject, while six are well above the average for success including English and maths.

Key Stage 4 league tables, released by the Department for Education today, make especially good reading for pupils, parents and teachers at Harton Technology College.

The school in Lisle Road, South Shields, scored a flawless 100 per cent for pupils gaining five or more A* to C grades across all subjects, improving on last year’s impressive 98 per cent.

Also at Harton, 65 per cent of pupils excelled in maths and English, two of the core curriculum subjects.

Chris Braybrook, head of school, said: “We always aim for all of our students to perform to the best of their ability.

“The hard work and dedication of staff and students are reflected in these achievements.”

Also among the top scorers was Whitburn C of E Academy in Shanks Road, Whitburn, where 89 per cent of pupils achieved five or more A* to C grades in all subjects, with 77 per cent reaching the equivalent grades in maths and English.

Headteacher Alan Hardie said: “We are delighted with the progress of the pupils during their time at Whitburn.

“The headline figure of 77 per cent of our students reaching their targets in both English and maths is a great achievement for us.”

Eight of the borough’s secondary schools improved their Key Stage 4 performance over last year.

With an overall average of 89.3 per cent, South Tyneside is above the national average 80 per cent for pupils who scored five or more A* to C grades in any subject, and scored an overall 57.7 per cent for achievement in maths and English, just below the national average of 58.2.

Coun Jim Foreman, South Tyneside Council’s lead member for children, families and young people, said: “Once again I am proud of how well our schools, teachers and pupils have done.

“My pride comes in the continuation of high standards and achievement.

“The results show that they clearly must be doing a lot of things right, and that is all credit to the staff at the schools and the students themselves, who have worked hard to get these results.”
