TOP MARKS ... children, families and staff at the Bede/St Marys Childrens Centre, in Jarrow, celebrate their Ofsted report.

A SOUTH Tyneside children’s centre is a valuable resource for families in the community.

That’s the verdict of education watchdog Ofsted, after an inspection at the Bede/St Mary’s Children’s Centre in Jarrow.

The centre, in Inverness Road, provides childcare for young children, and services for their families, including healthcare, adult learning, family support, and a well-baby clinic.

After the inspection, which took place in January, Ofsted has now rated the centre as ‘good’.

Julie Campbell, the centre’s co-ordinator, said: “We knew we were a good centre, we just needed Ofsted to put it in writing, so we are very happy with the report.

“We work closely with other organisations and tap into the needs of families in the local area.

“Our services are wide-ranging. We work with families on issues such as domestic violence, and if families are in need of information about health or careers, we can help them.

“The report is a good one, but we will continue to work hard to keep improving, and are committed to supporting children and their families.”

The inspectors’ report said: “Bede/St Mary’s Children’s Centre provides a good service to families in the area.

“Staff have a good understanding of the local community, and work hard to involve as many families as possible.

“Users speak highly of the support they have received, and how it has made a positive difference to them and their children. Provision for children and families is good.

“The children’s centre has a clear understanding of its reach area and the needs of its users, and accurately identifies target groups.”

The report praises leadership at the centre, and says staff have a ‘clear vision’ of how they want it to develop.

Inspectors are also impressed with how the centre works closely with other organisations in health and social care to provide services.

Adult learning courses, access to training and employment opportunities for parents, and facilities for breastfeeding are also described as key services.

The report encourages the centre to continue working with Jobcentre Plus to help unemployed parents to get back into work.

The centre, which opened in 2005, now caters for 531 children and their families.
