A-level students go to top of class
DELIGHT ... South Tyneside College principal Lyndsey Whiterod.
SIXTH formers in South Tyneside are continuing to reach high standards.
The borough’s three sixth form colleges, for pupils aged 16 to 18, are among the best performing in the North East for A-level success, according to new Key Stage 5 performance tables.
St Joseph’s RC College in Mill Lane, Hebburn, scored 100 per cent for pupils achieving at least one or two A-level qualifications last year.
An impressive 87 per cent of the 518 A-level pupils at St Joseph’s left with three or more qualifications.
It was another good year for South Tyneside College, where 75 per cent of its 1,916 pupils gained three or more A-levels.
No fewer than 99 per cent gained at least one qualification, and 90 per cent left the college, based in St George’s Avenue, South Shields, with at least two A-level qualifications.
Lindsey Whiterod, principal and chief executive, said: “This is fantastic news for the college and South Tyneside as a whole.
“It is also great reward for the students who have worked so hard to achieve these results, and a reflection of the high standards staff set.
“We are dedicated to delivering first-class education and training and have improved our results across the curriculum year on year. We will continue to work on improving these results in the year ahead and ensure that South Tyneside College is the first choice of all 16-18 learners in the borough.”
New league tables for Key Stage 5 reveal that A-level pupils in South Tyneside have done well compared to others in the North East.
In the borough, 99.6 per cent of all teenagers gained at least one A-level, with most pupils getting more.
The figures show that 93.6 per cent of South Tyneside’s sixth-formers left school with two or more A-levels, and 80.2 per cent gained at least three.
In the region, 100 per cent of sixth formers gained at least one A-level in North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland. Coun Jim Foreman, South Tyneside Council’s lead member for children, young people and families, said: “It’s reassuring to know that teenagers in South Tyneside are continuing to reach these high standards of achievement, and setting themselves up for the next stage of their development, whether that be university or the world of work.”
Yesterday, the Gazette published Key Stage 4 league tables for GCSE pupils in South Tyneside, which showed that the borough’s schools excelled for the second year running.
Coun Foreman added: “The league tables show that our schools are doing very well at both GCSE and A-level, and credit must go to pupils and staff who work so hard to achieve these figures.”
