Window smashed after couple’s porn row

A COUNCIL worker smashed a window at his South Tyneside home after his wife caught him watching pornography.

Dad-of-three Charles Torrance was told to leave his family home in Revesby Street, South Shields, after using his laptop to view the material.

But he returned shortly afterwards and punched a window, showering his wife with broken glass.

The 41-year-old appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage.

The court heard that Torrance and his wife had both been drinking at home on the night of Saturday, February 5, and had shared a bottle of vodka between them.

Paul Donay, prosecuting, said: “At 1am, she went to the living room and witnessed him watching pornography on the laptop. They argued over this, resulting in her asking him to leave.

“He left, and she placed the defendant’s clothes outside.”

Mr Donay added: “He used his fist to smash the window causing glass to fall into the bedroom. She was behind the window at the time, and says in her statement that the glass came on to her arm, face and hair, and that she suffered cuts.”

Magistrates heard that during a police interview, Torrance said he punched the window because he asked his wife for his wallet, but she refused to hand it over.

Rachel Gedney, defending, said: “He accepts punching the window, but did not intend to hurt his wife, and did not intend to assault his wife.”

Sentencing was adjourned until March 1, for probation reports.
