Solar panels worth £30,000 stolen from business park

THOUSANDS of pounds worth of solar panels have been stolen from a new £5m business park in South Tyneside.

Eighty-nine panels were taken from the building site at the borough’s Green Incubator in Havelock Street, Laygate, South Shields.

Police say the exact value of the stolen property is unknown, but it is thought the haul could be worth more than £30,000.

Each panel is 4ft x 5ft and consists mainly of silicon.

The raiders struck between 4am and 6am yesterday.

Neighbourhood Inspector Peter Sutton said: “Whoever stole them must have gone up three flights of stairs, and used something to lower the panels down to the ground.”

The three-story centre, on part of the former Circatex site, will be a 30,000sq ft hub of workshops and offices, which is hoped to attract eco-firendly firms and up to 200 jobs when it opens.
