Public split on buying fake clothes

Waiting for Video...

BARBOUR have declared war on fakes. The world-famous clothing firm, based in South Shields, has employed a specialist firm to track down factories which are making copies of their top-range clothing – and shut them down.

It has also teamed up with an expert internet security firm to try to nip counterfeit online sales in the bud.

Group finance director, Brenda Readman-Bell, said the production of fakes had risen drastically since the firm’s recent move into the fashion market, adding that Manchester was a counterfeit hotspot.

But do people in South Tyneside prefer to save money by buying fakes, or do they want the real thing?

Kerry Turner, 20, a full-time mum, of Chichester, South Shields, said: “I would buy fake stuff because it’s a lot cheaper, and not everyone can afford the real thing.

“If it looks just as good as the real thing, then I’d rather save the money.”

Support worker Nicola Steele, 35, of South Shields, said: “I prefer to have the real thing because sometimes what you pay for fake goods can still be a lot. I think a lot of people get ripped off buying fakes.

“Fake Ugg boots, for instance, pretty much come to the price you’d pay in the shops for real ones. People have to be really careful.”

Joanne Casner, a social services worker, of Blyth, Northumberland, has found another way to save some money.

The 26-year-old said: “I wouldn’t buy fakes, but I’d buy imitation goods from the high street. You might not get the same quality, but you save some money.

“I’ve got an imitation Barbour jacket from New Look, which is cosy and warm, and was about a fifth of the price.”

Scarlett Braithwaite, 18, an IT apprentice, of Hebburn, said: “I would pay the price for real stuff because it makes you feel better.

“But I know a lot of people can’t afford real stuff and I know a lot of people who buy fakes, but personally I prefer to have the real thing.”

Physiotherapy student Laura Johnson, 23, of the Lawe Top, South Shields, said: “It looks better if you’ve got the real thing.

“I’d rather save up to buy the genuine article. Then at least you know it’s the real thing.

“The real things will last longer as well. They’ll be much better quality.”

Allison Greer, 44, a shop worker, of Jarrow, said: “If the quality of the items was good, I’d probably buy them.

“But I did buy original Ugg boots because the rip-off ones aren’t very good.”

From my experience you get what you pay for. If something goes wrong after a couple of months, which is very rare the item is normally replaced without question.

I got my fingers burned years ago when TIMBERLAND boots were the thing to have. I paid a small fortune for a pair that lasted five minutes. From that day to this it's knock-off all the way for me. I'm not prepared to pay for the badge any more.

Kerry spoke for most out here , if it looks good and its cheap ..it will sell ..not everyone can afford ..top end goods . and the old british jobs argument ...would that be real british jobs for british workers ..or saving the jobs of those imported to take british jobs ?
