Police quiz man over Metro mugging

A MAN has been quizzed in connection with a robbery on a South Tyneside stretch of the Metro.

The Gazette reported last week that a 58-year-old man was robbed of his phone and bag while travelling on a late-night train towards Newcastle.

Three men approached the victim, one threatened him and demanded his phone and bag, which he handed over.

All three then told him to hand over his clothes, but he refused.

The group then got off the train at Fellgate station.

And after seeing a CCTV picture of the person in the Gazette that British Transport Police (BTP) wanted to talk to, a 20-year-old man handed himself in at South Shields police station.

The man, from Bedford, was questioned about the robbery and bailed by police until February 20 while police investigate further.

BTP Detective Constable Wayne Green said: “This was a very intimidating experience for the victim, who was very shaken by his ordeal.”

The robbery took place between 11.30pm and 11.50pm on January 28.

BTP are still appealing for witnesses to the robbery.

Anyone with information is asked to call 0800 405040, quoting reference BL10 of 07/02/2012, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
