Suspect ... a CCTV image from the Metro robbery.

A MAN was robbed of his mobile phone and ordered to hand over his clothes after being targeted by a gang on the South Tyneside stretch of the Metro.

The 58-year-old victim was travelling on a late-night train towards Newcastle when three men approached him.

One of them threatened him and demanded his phone and bag, which he handed over.

The trio left the train at Brockley Whins and hung around the platform before getting back on and telling the victim to hand over his clothes.

This time, the man, from Sunderland, refused and the group got off the train again at Fellgate station.

British Transport Police described the man’s ordeal as “intimidating”, and have now released CCTV images of a suspect they are looking for.

Detective Constable Wayne Green said: “This was a very intimidating experience for the victim, who was very shaken by his ordeal. I am urging anyone who may recognise the man, or have any information that may help police with our inquires, to contact us.”

Richard McClean, managing director of Metro operator DB Regio Tyne and Wear, said: “We have a zero-tolerance policy of criminal behaviour perpetrated against passengers or staff on trains or at Metro stations.

“We are fully co-operating with the British Transport Police on this particular case and have provided them with appropriate CCTV images.

“Metro’s CCTV system provides very clear images, which can help police to readily identify and, consequently, find those who have acted unlawfully.”

The robbery took place between 11.30pm and 11.50pm on Saturday, January 28.

Anyone with information can call British Transport Police on 0800 405040, quoting reference BL10 of 07/02/2012, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Metro bosses will have us believe that the system is safer than ever with usless cctv scattered around that merely records violence and muggings, does NOT prevent them. Who are they kidding? Incidents like this and others are routine, you only have to read the papers to see. Of course the ones who bluster that all is well and think they know whats best for everybody else make sure their never alone on the metro late at night when the aggro takes place, if ever at all.
