Police found cannabis after stopping wrong man

A MAN stopped by police by mistake was found to have cannabis on him.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard Michael Lambert was questioned by police who were looking for a “man in a hat”.

The 30-year-old was wearing a hat, but was not the person they were looking for.

However, the officers found a bag of cannabis on him, and he was arrested.

Lambert, of Manet Gardens, Whiteleas, South Shields, pleaded guilty to possessing a Class B drug yesterday.

Paul Donay, prosecuting, said: “Police stopped the defendant, and asked if he had anything illegal on him.

“He told them he had some ‘green’ and handed over a plastic bag with cannabis inside.”

Paul Kennedy, defending, said: “Police were looking for a man in a hat at the time.

“He was wearing a hat and despite not being the person in question, was stopped.

“Unfortunately for him, he had some cannabis on him.”

Mr Kennedy told the court that Lambert is trying to overcome a drink problem, and as a result is having trouble sleeping.

He said he uses the cannabis to help him sleep.

Magistrates gave Lambert a 12-month conditional discharge.
