Patient threatened to trash hospital ward

A MAN threatened to trash a hospital ward after downing a cocktail of drink and drugs.

Police were called to the Bede Wing, in the grounds of South Tyneside Hospital, after John Joyce became aggressive with staff.

They found the 30-year-old shouting about smashing windows and harming people.

They arrested him.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard he had been drinking on top of his medication.

Joyce, of George Scott Street, South Shields, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly.

Paul Doney, prosecuting, said: “At 1.10pm on 1 November, police were called to the Bede Wing. When they got there, they saw the defendant threatening to smash the windows and he said he wanted to harm someone.

“They noticed he was drunk and he started to run away. He was stopped and continued to be aggressive and was arrested.”

The court heard Joyce has mental health problems and takes anti-psychotic medication.

Defending himself, Joyce said: “I had been drinking on top of my medication, and for some reason I went back to the Bede Wing. I was freaking out a bit, but I shouldn’t have done it.”

Magistrates handed Joyce a 12-month conditional discharge.
