A THIEF who stole from her dad was back in the dock after being nabbed trying to swipe meat from a South Tyneside store.

Laura Tinn had five pieces of meat in a carrier bag when she was stopped from leaving Tesco in Simonside, South Shields.

Security staff became suspicious of the 21-year-old and a friend as they walked in the aisles of the supermarket in Newcastle Road.

A security guard followed her movements on CCTV and watched as she put the joints in the carrier bag.

Tinn, of Ravenswood Road, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Paul Donay, prosecuting, said: “A security guard working at Tesco saw Tinn and another woman in the store with JD Sports carrier bags.

He watched them on CCTV while they went into the meat aisle, and saw Tinn pick up two joints of meat. “She put the meat in the carrier bag, and walked out of the aisle and out of the shop.

“He stopped her outside, at which point he asked if she could put it back.”

Mr Donay added that when police came, they found five pieces of meat on her.

Magistrates heard from the probation service that Tinn has committed crimes in the past because of problems with drink and drugs.

Christopher Brown, defending, said: “This is a nuisance offence, and she was caught straight away.

“Whether it was committed out of desperation or otherwise, it came to the attention of the police.

“This is a turning point for her. She has to turn her life around, and I’d ask you to give her that opportunity.”

Magistrates gave Tinn a 12-month community order with supervision.

Chairman of the bench, Jean Roach, said: “The only person who can help you is yourself.

“If you breach the order, you will come back to court and it will be your own fault.”

In December, Tinn was made subject to a curfew between 8pm and 7am for three months after stealing a Nintendo Wii, including games and controllers, and a mobile phone, from her dad.

She admitted stealing the items, and then passing them to a friend to sell on at South Shields second-hand store CEX after staying at his house.

She was ordered to pay £67 to CEX after the goods were seized back.
