Man threw phones over prison wall

A MAN from South Tyneside who threw mobile phones over the wall of a prison has been jailed for a year.

Glen Francis, 39, of Beach Road, South Shields, was caught throwing two packages of phones to prisoners in Durham Jail, the city’s Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Katherine Dunn said prison authorities were waiting for the packages each time.

She said: “Information had been received that an attempt would be made to throw phones over the wall, and Francis was caught on CCTV and arrested after a short chase.

“He said he had been refused permission to visit a prisoner, and decided to throw stones over the wall for a laugh.”

Francis admitted conveying a prohibited item into prison on January 13 and 18.

He has previous convictions for 96 offences, and has spent most of his adult life in prison, the court heard.

Vince Ward, defending, said: “He owed money to someone in prison and feared violence would be used against him if he didn’t do as he was asked.”

Recorder Mr Martin Bethel QC told him: “Someone with your experience of the prison system knows the difficulties mobile phones in the hands of prisoners can cause. For that reason alone, a custodial sentence must be imposed.”
