Man caught with drugs - on his way to court to answer drugs charge
A DOPEY defendant who got involved in a fight at South Shields Metro station dropped illegal drugs in front of police.
Police saw a ‘wrap’ filled with 22 diazepam tablets and cannabis fall to the ground – seconds after Kyle Smith told them he wasn’t involved in any trouble and didn’t want any – because he was on his way to Newcastle to be sentenced for possessing drugs. He was then arrested again.
Smith, of The Royalty, Sunderland, avoided jail when he appeared at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday to be sentenced for possession of Class B and C drugs, after admitting the charges at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
Prosecutor Paul Rowland said Smith was arrested on suspicion of affray and put into a police van, adding: “A small wrap of blue pills and another substance dropped between his legs.”
Mr Rowland said Smith was in breach of a 12-month suspended sentence for burglary.
Smith was given a three-month community order for drug possession, and a 7am-to-7pm curfew.
Judge Leslie Spittal also increased Smith’s suspended burglary sentence by three months for the breach.
