LEGAL eagle Jenny Carter is setting up a new branch of the law.

For she is helping open major Newcastle law firm David Gray LLP’s South Shields office.

And it’s a homecoming of sorts for the family law specialist.

She started her legal career in the town before switching to David Gray a year ago.

Mrs Carter, 44, is part of a team of seven who will be based at its new Fowler Street outlet, which opens on February 1.

It is only the firm’s second office and comes two years after bosses first looked to expand in South Tyneside.

An existing strong client base coupled with a lack of solicitors specialising in housing and family law were deciding factors.

The firm has also just won housing and family legal aid contracts which will give more clients access to its services.

Said Mrs Carter, who lives in Newcastle: “I’m very much looking forward to working again in South Shields, it’s a very busy area.

“A lot of my clients moved with me to Newcastle but the world is changing and people often want a very accessible service closer to home.

“We will offer a broad range of services that may not necessarily be available now.”

Mrs Carter, who is married and from Cambridge, studied politics and international relations at Newcastle University.

She did not qualify as a lawyer until 1997, having travelled and worked in the voluntary sector among other things.

Her first job was at South Shields law firm Weldon Houlsby & Scott, which became Ward Hadaway after a merger.

Seven years later she switched to Patterson Glenton & Stracey, where she became its first female partner.

She is also a director of South Tyneside Women’s Aid, which works to end domestic violence against women and children.

David Gray’s office will boast three other family lawyers, as well as a housing lawyer and two support staff.

It will be headed by Lucy Mead, a qualified Advocate in the Family Proceedings Court, County Court and High Court.

David Gray’s managing partner Elspeth Thomson said: “There are no solicitors who specialise in housing law and those who deal in family law are very busy.

“David Gray has the biggest family division of any law firm in the North East and so have something very strong to offer.

“We noticed that a lot of people from South Shields came to us for advice and so we wanted to make it easier for them to do that.

“Jenny has strong links with South Shields and a bond that goes back many years, so this feels a bit like returning home.

“She is very much looking forward this new opportunity.”

Housing law and family law and all women. Just like most social workers. Divorcing or separating fathers can look forward to being well stuffed by the sisters.
