Former teen singing star admits fraud

A FORMER teenage singing star from South Tyneside tried to pay for a Chinese meal using a credit card stolen from rugby legend Lawrence Dallaglio.

As a youngster, Aidan Salter, from Cleadon, strutted his stuff as pop star Will Young on ITV’s Stars in Their Eyes.

Now 21, he was was arrested after trying to use the Mastercard five times to try to settle a £43.80 bill at Hungs restaurant in Soho, central London.

The card, linked to an account with Coutts - the exclusive ‘Queen’s Bank’ - had been taken from the former England skipper and cancelled in 2005, Westminster Magistrates Court heard.

Izolda Gribbin, prosecuting, said the jobless diner and a female companion had sat down to eat at the restaurant in Wardour Street at about 3.30am on October 20, 2010.

After the card was rejected, he left to use a cash machine, but returned five minutes later and admitted he had no money to pay for the food.

“He said he was going to pay later as he was unable to pay that day,” she said.

“He was told he was unable to do that and the police were called.”

Following his arrest, Salter, who has no previous convictions, told officers the card had belonged to his ‘millionaire’ step-brother, the court heard.

“He said he went out and picked it up and he intended to return it,” said Ms Gribbin.

Lawrence Dallaglio was a member of the England squad that won the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and later captained the side following the retirement of Martin Johnson.

Bailing Salter to return for sentencing on March 7, bench chairman John Newgas said: “It is essentially that a probation report be obtained.

“We therefore intend to adjourn this matter for three weeks.”

Salter, of South Drive, Cleadon, admits fraud by false representation and possession of an article for use in fraud.
