Drunk challenged strangers to a fight

A DRUNKEN man was arrested after challenging strangers to a fight in a South Tyneside street.

Police were called to King Street, South Shields, after members of the public reported a man causing trouble.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Christopher Connor, with his shirt unbuttoned, trying to goad people into a fight.

The 34-year-old, of Gordon Road, South Shields, was arrested and charged with being drunk and disorderly.

Connor didn’t show up for court, but magistrates decided to proceed with his case in his absence.

Paul Donay, prosecuting, said: “At 9.22pm on February 3, police were called to King Street after a report of a man with his shirt off, trying to start trouble.

“When the officers got there, the defendant had his shirt on, but it was open, and he was trying to get people nearby to fight him.

“He appeared drunk and was waving his arms around.”

Magistrates found the charge proved in Connor’s absence, fined him £115 and ordered him to pay £85 costs.
