Council boss faces nine counts of fraud

Fraud charges ... Wendy Bulmer.

Fraud charges ... Wendy Bulmer.

A COMMUNITY centre manager accused of a £24,000 fraud will be dealt with at crown court.

Wendy Bulmer is alleged to have abused her position in charge of the council-run Perth Green centre on Jarrow’s Scotch Estate between April 2008 and March last year.

She faces nine fraud charges, including false accounting, fraud by false representation and manipulating a cash register.

The 49-year-old, of Lambley Crescent, Hebburn, was at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday, where she spoke only to confirm her age, name and address.

Due to the serious nature of the allegations, magistrates declined jurisdiction of the case and asked for it to be dealt with at Newcastle Crown Court.

Her solicitor, Craig Hunn, told the court his client was not entering any pleas until she appeared in Newcastle.

Prosecutor Keith Laidlaw said South Tyneside Council received an anonymous call alleging financial irregularities at the Inverness Road centre and launched an investigation.

Bulmer’s next appearance will be at Newcastle Crown Court on March 9, when she is expected to plead to all charges.

She was given unconditional bail until then.
