CCTV snares lamb raider

A SHOPLIFTER who was ‘on the lamb’ after twice stealing meat from the same South Tyneside store was caught when police recognised him from CCTV footage.

Marc Fareham stole five legs of lamb from Farmfoods in Hebburn’s St James’s Mall in two separate raids last month.

The 39-year-old wasn’t caught at the time but, after officers reviewed the store’s CCTV images, one eagle-eyed cop recognised him.

He was arrested soon after and admitted to stealing the meat, worth £65.

Fareham, of Toner Avenue, Hebburn, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

Rachel Dodsworth, prosecuting, said: “Three legs of lamb were stolen on June 12 and, between January 2 and 6, a further two were stolen.

“He was identified by a police officer who was reviewing CCTV images some time after the event.

“He was seen to put them in carrier bags before leaving the shop without paying for them.” She added: “After being arrested he told police he needed some money so sold them to people standing outside Jarrow’s Iona Club.”

Ian Haq, defending, said: “He was only identified on CCTV for one of the thefts but told the police about the other one so that could be taken into consideration.

“However, they decided to charge him with it, which they are entitled to do.

“He has pleaded guilty and brought one of the thefts to the police’s intention.

“He took the meat because he needed the money.”

Magistrates gave Fareham a six-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £64.75 compensation to Farmfoods.

He was also ordered to pay £40 costs.
