Time to nominate your heroes for Pride awards
NOMINATIONS are now open for the Pride of South Tyneside awards, which honour the borough’s most courageous, caring, hard-working and selfless folk.
It was 10 years ago that the award scheme was launched to recognise and honour the many unsung heroes in our community.
Since then, the Pride Of South Tyneside awards ceremony has become one of the highlights of the borough’s calendar – an event which has become a celebration of all that’s best in our borough and its people.
And this year will be no different.
The glittering ceremony – staged by the Gazette, borough council and the Customs House theatre – is being held at Temple Park Centre in John Reid Road, South Shields, on April 22.
But first, we’re asking you to nominate those you feel deserve an award. To fill in an online entry form, click here.
The categories are:

* Young Performer(s) of the Year (under-21s).
Previous winners include 2009 X-Factor champion Joe McElderry and Jade Thirlwall, who came out on top in the national talent show with the girl group Little Mix. They were our Young Performer of the Year in 2008 and 2010 respectively.
The awards are organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House.
Gazette editor John Szymanski said: “From small beginnings, it’s astonishing how the Pride Of South Tyneside Awards continue to flourish 10 years on.
“We aim to honour the best of the borough, and over the years we have been privileged to hear wonderful stories of courage, hard work, outstanding achievement and all-round determination.
“On occasions there hasn’t been a dry eye in the house when hearing about how people in South Tyneside have overcome the odds and become the best.”
He added: “I’m pleased tht a decade of Pride has been reached. It’s a marvellous milestone and every effort is being made to ensure that it’s the biggest and best yet.”
Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Jim Sewell, said: “The Pride of South Tyneside awards recognise the real heroes in our communities and the remarkable things they do.
“With the support of the Shields Gazette, we can celebrate their achievements, acknowledge the fantastic contribution they make to South Tyneside and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.”
Ray Spencer, executive director of the Customs House, will host the event and said: “It’s really important, especially in times like those we are going through, that we recognise the exceptional contributions individuals make to their community.
“Over the last 10 years, Pride has told some heartwarming, courageous and inspiring stories of those people who are prepared to go the extra mile to make South Tyneside the special place it is.”
Des Young, service director for Siemens, the event’s main sponsor, said: “Siemens Transmission and Distribution Limited is very proud to once again support this year’s Pride Of South Tyneside Awards.
“The event provides an excellent opportunity to recognise the outstanding contribution of people within South Tyneside.”
