Talk sport ... The Clock landlord Norman Scott is to host a talk night with Les Ferdinand in aid of St Clares campaign.

FORMER Newcastle United striker Les Ferdinand is set to ‘net’ funds for the Gazette’s c/o St Clare’s campaign.

The England and Magpies star is the star of a sports talk, organised by Norman Scott, landlord of The Clock in Victoria Road East, Hebburn.

The event, to be held at Elmfield Social Club in Campbell Park Road, Hebburn, will give footie fans a chance to get up close and personal with the ex-Toon goalscorer.

Norman said: “I’m so delighted to have Les on board, and the night is set to be a brilliant night out for football fans.

“At The Clock, we’ve always been big supporters of charities, especially local causes, and we’ve done a lot over the years to raise money for St Clare’s.

“Hopefully, this event will raise a few thousand pounds for the hospice, so that it can continue to do the brilliant job it does.”

The hospice, in Primrose Terrace, Jarrow, provides palliative care to the people of South Tyneside with life-limiting illnesses.

It has annual running costs of £2m – £1.4m of which it must raise itself.

But this year it is facing a £50,000 shortfall, and the Gazette launched its campaign to help raise the funds.

A photographer will be on site at the event to take souvenir pictures with the footballer, affectionately nicknamed Sir Les, against a backdrop of St James’s Park.

An A4-mounted colour photograph can be bought for £10, with £4 going to St Clare’s.

The photographs will be behind the bar at The Clock on Easter Sunday for people to collect.

Ferdinand, who was awarded an MBE in 2005, is the joint fifth-highest scorer of all time in the Premier League, with 149 goals, scoring 41 of those in 68 league games for Newcastle.

Norman added: “Seeing the stories in the paper has made me realise just how important St Clare’s is to the people of South Tyneside, and I’m glad to do something to help.

“We’re set for a fantastic night with Les, and hope that people will come along.

“Tickets are selling fast, so if you want one you’ll have to be quick.”

The event takes place on Friday, April 6, from 6.30pm. Tickets cost £30, including a half-time buffet, and are available from The Clock.
