A MYSTERY benefactor has given the Gazette’s c/o St Clare’s appeal a £5,000 boost.

The generous donor has brought the running total up to £29,883 – more than halfway to our £50,000 target.

The campaign was launched in November in a bid to fill the fundraising shortfall suffered by the hospice.

The hospice in Primrose Terrace, Jarrow, which provides palliative care to the people of South Tyneside with life-limiting illnesses, has annual running costs of £2m.

But it must raise £1.4m of that money itself, and relies heavily on the support of local people.

Fundraising manager Marie Watson said: “Someone presented our healthcare assistant Pat Ogilvie with a cheque, and then our receptionist Carol Halliday rang me up to tell me. I couldn’t believe it.

“And they wanted to stay anonymous. This generous donation couldn’t have come at a better time. February has been a bit of a slow month so far, so it’s really lifted everybody’s spirits.

“The fact that someone would give up this much of their own money is amazing and really shows you how kind people can be.

“We’re so pleased with how well the campaign is going so far and it’s been a huge help to us. It’s been a huge boost, not just financially, but even in letting us know that people care.”

Since the campaign launched, the people of South Tyneside have rallied around the hospice, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, making donations and holding fundraising events.

Gazette editor John Szymanski said: “This is an incredibly generous donation and one that has given our campaign a brilliant boost.

“When we launched our appeal, our aim was to show people how important the work that St Clare’s does is within the community, and to inspire people to help .

“The fact that this person donated such a huge amount of money without looking for any public recognition or thanks is astonishing.

“We are now just shy of the £30,000 mark, and I hope readers can rally round to help reach our £50,000 target.”
