Hospice is focus of binoculars sale

ZOOMING IN ... bed and breakfast owner, Dave Slater, is hoping to sell a stock of binoculars to raise funds for St Clares.

A GUESTHOUSE owner is focusing his efforts to raise money for a South Tyneside hospice.

Dave Slater has 350 pairs of binoculars, which he is hoping to sell to raise money for St Clare’s Hospice.

The 61-year-old, who owns The Clifton Guest House in Ocean Road, South Shields, with his wife, Susan, hopes to raise between £3,000 and £4,000 for the hospice.

The grandad-of-three said: “I used to be a partner at the Ramble Inn climbing shop in Dean Road, and sold the binoculars to outdoor magazines. But when I left and took over the guesthouse, they were packed away and I forgot about them until recently.

“I saw stories in the Gazette about St Clare’s suffering a shortfall, and wanted to do something to help, so thought I could sell the binoculars and give all the profits to them.”

The hospice in Primrose Terrace, Jarrow, provides palliative care to the people of South Tyneside with life-limiting illnesses.

It has annual running costs of £2m, of which £1.4m it must raise itself.

But this year it is facing a £50,000 shortfall, and the Gazette launched its c/o St Clare’s campaign to help raise the funds.

Mr Slater said: “The retail price is £40, but I’m going to sell them for £25 and, hopefully, I can raise some money for St Clare’s.

“It does a tremendous job, and I just hope that I don’t end up needing it myself – but you never know if you will.

“In the past we’ve had coffee mornings for Macmillan, and we’ve always enjoyed doing our bit to help. We help out where we can.

“Of course, there’s a limit to what we can do, but if everyone chips in and does something to help, it will make a difference.”

350 x £25 = £8750. I'm sure the hospice could use it all
