Hospice appeal reaches new landmark - but we still need more!
GETTING THERE ... St Clare's fundraising manager Marie Watson with the Gazette's Alison Gofton.
THE total has hit £30,000, and the cash is still coming in!
Gazette readers have helped reach another milestone in our c/o St Clare’s campaign to save the borough’s hospice from a cash crisis.
It was only last Thursday that a mystery £5,000 donation saw the campaign to help St Clare’s Hospice sail through the £25,000 mark.
Now, just five days later, we’ve hit another milestone thanks to the support and generosity of people in South Tyneside.
The campaign, which aims to raise £50,000 for St Clare’s, now stands at £31,623.66.
The Gazette launched the fundraising scheme in November to raise money for the hospice in Primrose Terrace, Jarrow, which provides palliative care to the people of South Tyneside with life-limiting illnesses.
It has annual running costs of £2m, of which it must raise £1.4m itself. But this year it is facing a £50,000 shortfall, and the Gazette is aiming to plug the gap.
Gazette editor, John Szymanski, said: “It’s great news that we are now well over half way towards our £50,000 target.
“I would just urge everyone to give one final push to get us as close to that target as we can over the next few weeks so that the hospice can carry on doing the brilliant job it does.”
Marie Watson, fundraising manager at St Clare’s, said: “Everyone at St Clare’s is thrilled to have reached this point in the campaign.
“This is a huge achievement and a massive help to the hospice.
“It is something that would not have been possible without the help and support of people in South Tyneside.”
She added: “We’re so grateful to everyone who has helped raise this money, and we’re positive that it will be put to good use in allowing the hospice to continue to do its work.”
