YOUNG footballers with a strong community spirit have signed up for a season of fundraising for a South Tyneside charity.

Members of Hebburn Town Juniors FC plan to raise cash for St Clare’s Hospice, Jarrow, throughout 2012.

Young players from the club made a big cash splash for the hospice after taking part in the annual Boxing Day dip in the North Sea, raising £700 for patient care.

Club officials say they plan to stage a number of fundraising events on behalf of the hospice, whose annual running costs have risen to about £2m.

Club chairman Stephen Rutherford, who presented hospice fundraiser Vanessa Mustard-Wright with a cheque for £700, said: “St Clare’s has touched so many of our club members’ friends and family that we felt it appropriate to support where we can.

“Our club is a community-based football club, with the emphasis on ‘community,’ so helping St Clare’s is a privilege and we hope to make this a more regular occurrence.”

Vanessa said: “We were delighted to receive a cheque for £700 from Stephen on behalf of Hebburn Town Juniors FC.

“We hope to continue working with the club in the future and would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported them.”

The hospice is finalising its fundraising calendar for 2012, which will include events such as a Midnight Walk, It’s a Knockout and other charity ventures, as it marks its 25th anniversary in South Tyneside.

Hebburn Town Juniors FC is based at Clegwell CA, in Mountbatten Avenue, Hebburn, offering sporting opportunities to players aged four to 21.

Well done to Hebburn Town Juniors FC, giving their support to a much needed local charity. In hard financial times like these it's great to see a voluntary run junior football club going that extra mile to support it's surrounding community when i bet it could do with extra funds itself. Well done to all the young lads and lasses and the officials who help make it happen. Black n Yellow army...
