Shoe firm Mes sorry for dragging its heels on deliveries

APOLOGY ... Mes Footworks founder Matt Scott has admitted delivery problems.

A TRENDY shoe firm has apologised to customers after finding itself at the centre of a trading standards probe.

South Shields-based Mes Footworks is facing complaints it hasn’t delivered the goods on time.

They include one customer claiming trainers ordered in November with a guaranteed Christmas delivery date only arrived on Thursday.

South Tyneside trading standards bosses would not reveal the number of complaints, but confirmed: “We are looking into the matter.”

Mes received national exposure in November when its designer trainers were featured on BBC2’s Something For The Weekend show.

Guest star Stephen Merchant – comedian Ricky Gervais’s comedy partner and co-creator of The Office – described them as “tremendous”.

It led to a flood in orders for the business, which is based at Tedco Business Works, near Crossgate.

Today, boss Matt Scott, 24, who set up the firm four years ago, admitted there had been problems with some deliveries.

But he defended his company, adding: “After appearing in national magazines and on TV in the run-up Christmas, we were absolutely inundated with sales. As every pair of trainers is made to order, a small number of customers may have experienced delays.

“I’d like to apologise for any inconvenience. I’m very pleased to hear that customers who have now received their trainers are very happy with them.

“We’ve recently invested in new equipment to bring all Mes Footwork manufacturing in-house, creating five new jobs in South Shields.

“This will ensure that delays like this become a thing of the past.”

South Shields-born Mr Scott formed Mes after looking at ways to design shoes for his then girlfriend.

Mr Scott, who lives in Washington, successfully found a way to print artwork on to the canvas of the footwear.
