Gold Card users to benefit from prize freeze
KNOCK-ON EFFECT ... Bernard Garner of Nexus.
OLDER Metro travellers in South Tyneside have struck gold after the price of their travel pass was frozen.
When transport bosses meet this week, they are expected to keep the price of a Nexus Gold Card – which provides access to the system for a year – at £25.
Last year the same committee – the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (ITA) – agreed to more than double the price of the cards from £12.
But the news of a price halt, coupled with a freeze in child tickets, has been offset by worries of bad news ahead.
Last month Nexus announced it had won extra cash from the Government, allowing it to reduce a planned ticket price hike this year.
The £400,000 subsidy meant a rise in single tickets, which had been due to go up by 20p this month, could be halved to 10p.
However, the committee will be told this grant does not add to the long-term costs of keeping the Metro running – and it means passengers face larger than expected rises next year.
Bernard Garner, director general of Nexus, pictured, said: “The knock-on effect means we will have to ‘catch up’ with the rising cost of other items next year.”

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 05:46 PMi agree with brichomba, how much more can they keep hitting pensioners. is there nothing that they won,t do against them. the rises are far to steep. how would the rest of the public like there fares to go up by the same percentage. what about our caring society

Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 01:05 PMso nobody is bothered by the terrible spelling in the headline? I was wondering what the Prize was? perhaps a fluffy teddy bear that they have now put on ice?

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 03:59 PMGet real everybody, £25 for a years Metro travel is a bargain. Think of those who have to pay over £700 for the same priviledge. True they can travel before 09:30, but that is not too much of a sacrifice for us pensioners is it?

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 03:25 PMI wouldn't use the Metro if it was free. It's dirty, full of headcases and there's a 5050 chance of being mugged at some of the stations (yes, I'm talking Fellgate).

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 03:04 PMWhat a load of rubbish, Nexus lost more customers than they gained when they doubled the price of the Gold card, and are now trying to make it look like they are doing something for them, to get them back. NOT A CHANCE.
