Firms bridge borders to widen vision

FORUM FORCE ... the brainchild of Geoff Ford MBE.

BUSINESS boss Geoff Ford’s new vision for expanding his brainchild manufacturing forum has been given a major boost.

Two North-East firms have joined the South Tyneside Manufacturing Forum (STMF) just days after it opened to companies outside the borough.

North Tyneside-based Quick Hydraulics and Liebherr – Sunderland Works Limited, have both signed up.

The expansion comes after STMF chairman, Geoff Ford MBE, speaking at its annual dinner at South Tyneside College last week, announced the business group was broadening its horizons.

Now firms from across North Tyneside, Wearside, Gateshead, Newcastle and Northumberland, are welcome to join.

Mr Ford, 68, chairman of STMF, said: “Manufacturing is the original creator of wealth, particularly in the North East. We hope that by widening our membership we can provide a stronger voice in the region.

“The forum has a strong track record when it comes to providing real member benefits.”

He added: “We have monthly meetings with expert speakers, and can access advice and support on a range of business topics.”

Mr Ford, chairman of Tyne Dock-based Ford Aerospace, launched the forum five years ago to offer a platform for manufacturing companies to meet, share problems and exchange best practice.

Liebherr’s managing director, Ralph Saelzer, said: “Manufacturing is the backbone of the economy, and the forum offers valuable benefits for members, especially SME businesses. We are happy that this service is now available across the region.”

Speakers at the dinner were Mr Ford, Martin Swales, chief executive of South Tyneside Council, and South Tyneside College principal, Lindsey Whiterod.

Mrs Whiterod said: “South Tyneside College has excellent links with the manufacturing forum, the education project – Made In South Tyneside – in particular.

“This promotes manufacturing as a career choice and, by opening up the membership, we aim to create more opportunities.”
