Banking jobs boost for city

A CALL centre in Sunderland is set for a jobs boost after a major banking group announced 500 new positions.

Lloyds Banking Group is to create the new jobs as part of plans to sell off more than 600 of its branches. The European Union ordered the sell-off following the UK government’s bailout of the bank in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

The sale – nicknamed ‘Project Verde’ by the bank – is likely to see about 19 per cent of mortgages taken on by the Co-operative Group.

Bosses say its contact centre at Hylton Riverside, which already employs 500 people, will be among five sites across the UK to be transferred to the Verde business, and all existing jobs at the site will be safeguarded.

Staff will provide telephony, banking operations and mortgage advice support to the hived-off company.
