BAE slump won’t affect yard jobs, says boss
NO JOBS RISK ... says A&P managing director Stewart Boak.
A DEFENCE giant’s fall in sales will not hit more jobs in South Tyneside, a yard boss claimed today.
BAE Systems is forecasting a 14 per cent sales drop because of a decrease in military spending in the UK and US.
The group, which employs more than 700 people in the North East, saw sales fall more than expected to £19.2bn last year.
There are further fears for South Tyneside jobs if BAE axes its Portsmouth yard, where two new UK aircraft carriers are being built.
A&P Tyne, Hebburn, is building sections for the massive defence contract, and the borough yard has already lost more than 90 jobs after part of the carrier programme was switched to Portsmouth – where there is a shortage of work – before Christmas.
But reacting to the latest profit alert by BAE, A&P Tyne managing director Stewart Boak said: “There’s nothing new that could impact on the business at A&P.”
Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn, visiting the yard last week, was told how A&P Tyne is attempting to bounce back to commercial health by securing a series of small ship- repair contracts.
The South Tyneside yard, which boasts the biggest dry dock facility on the east coast of England, is also planning to chase fresh contracts in the energy and offshore markets.
Recent contracts secured by A&P Tyne include repairs on the offshore supply ships, Neptune Despina and Neptune Larissa, where the work is expected to last two months.
