THE search is on for South Tyneside’s next rising star.

The nominations for this year’s Young Performer(s) of the Year in the Pride of South Tyneside awards will battle it out for the top spot.

The event, which was won by X Factor stars Joe McElderry in 2008 and Jade Thirlwall, of girl band Little Mix, in 2010, is set to be held at the Customs House in Mill Dam, South Shields, on Sunday, March 18.

Ray Spencer, executive director at the venue, said: “The strength and depth of the talented young people in South Tyneside never ceases to amaze me. As we all know, previous winners have gone on to national recognition.

“I hope everyone comes along and tries to spot who’ll be the next big star.”

Other previous winners include Emilie Fleming, a contestant in BBC’s Over the Rainbow in 2009, and last year the crown was taken by Lauren Waine.

The 16-year-old, from Whitburn, went on to support Joe McElderry at his homecoming concert in Bents Park last year, play the lead role of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz at the Customs House, and perform at the Stadium of Light on Bonfire Night, among other events.

She said: “Winning Pride last year was totally life changing. It opens up so many opportunities, and I’ve had a great year since winning.

“It’s definitely an amazing opportunity for someone who wants to perform.”
