A RECRUITMENT drive for Street Angels to help keep party-goers safe is proving to be a success.

The scheme is winging its way to South Shields to offer support to weekend revellers in trouble.

Before the project can get off the ground organisers need to recruit about 30 volunteers willing to look out for those who have had too much to drink.

Now, after highlighting the idea in the Gazette, organisers have been delighted with the response from interested parties.

Volunteer committee member Bernadette Askins said: “We have had a really good response to the scheme so far.

“We have had a number of applications for the co-ordinator’s position, and a lot of people interested in becoming volunteers.

“It has been a really good response, and we hope to see as many people as possible attend our information evening, where they will be able to find out more.”

The scheme, led by Churches Together in South Tyneside, is being funded by the Community Action Against Crime Innovation Fund and is being supported by both South Tyneside Council and the police.

The Street Angels, who are expected to hit the streets of South Shields town centre by the end of April, will operate between the hours of 10pm and 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Similar projects are already running in Sunderland and Newcastle city centres, with street pastors offering support and guidance.

A training programme has been devised to help new Street Angels, who will be operating in groups of three, stay safe when out and about in the town centre.

New recruits will also be given basic first aid training and identifiable clothing to wear.

A recruitment event is being held at 6.30pm on Thursday at The Church Centre in Broughton Road, South Shields, for anyone over the age of 18, who is interested in becoming a Street Angel.

Will the Angels be able to hand out Tracey's town centre banning orders to the people they assist?

How about the Angels doing the shopping for the elderly or helping single mums look after their children or helping the mentally ill get by out in the community? Is it because the Community Action Against Crime Innovation Fund isn't willing to pay for any of those things?
