YOUNG thespians in South Tyneside will be discovering the teenage years of some of Shakespeare’s greatest characters as they join a national drama festival.

The Customs House Youth Theatre members from South Shields will be taking part in the National Theatre’s Connections Festival in London for the second year running.

After their success in last year’s competition with Cloudbusting, the group will tackle The Prince Of Denmark by Michael Lesslie.

The play is set a decade before the action in Shakespeare’s Hamlet – as the teenage hero, Ophelia and Laertes rebel against the roles handed down by their parents.

In a further twist, the group will perform it in an urban setting, rather than the Elizabethan period it is written in.

Fiona Kelly, youth facilitator at the Customs House, said: “The senior group had a hugely successful year last year, but this will be the busiest so far for the performers and they will need to work extremely hard.

“I know how committed the group are, and they are all ready to work hard and enjoy themselves.”

The young actors will be performing the play at the Customs House in Mill Dam on March 11 and 12, before transferring to Newcastle’s Northern Stage later that month.

They will then be assessed before discovering if they take it to the capital.

Members of the junior group will also be performing their first play at the end of March, which has been especially written for them by Catherine Scott.

Miss Kelly added: “The junior group is now ready to take their first steps onto the stage in their very first production, so it’s a very exciting year ahead.”
